Solar that floats, and works even harder
Floating photovoltaic arrays on reservoirs and dams, where the cool of the water lifts your yield and a blanket of panels guards precious water from evaporation.
Some of the best places to put solar are not on land at all. Floating photovoltaics, or floating solar, mount arrays on buoyant pontoons across reservoirs, irrigation dams, quarry lakes and water treatment ponds. These calm surfaces are often idle, close to existing infrastructure, and free of the land-use conflicts that can complicate ground-mounted projects. Helios Horizon turns that still water into a quietly humming source of clean energy.
Water that boosts your yield
Floating solar carries a genuine performance advantage. Solar panels lose efficiency as they heat up, shedding output on the very hottest, brightest days. Sitting just above cool water, floating modules run at lower temperatures, and that cooling effect can lift annual generation by several per cent compared with a hot rooftop or paddock. The same sun, the same panels, simply more kilowatt-hours, because the water keeps everything calm and cool.
The benefit runs both ways. A floating array shades the water beneath it, dramatically reducing evaporation, which is invaluable for irrigation dams and drinking-water reservoirs in a drying climate. The shade also suppresses algal blooms by limiting sunlight and warmth, helping keep stored water cleaner. In effect, every panel does two jobs at once, generating power above while protecting water below.
Engineered for life on the water
Building on water demands purpose-built engineering. We use UV-stable, recyclable floats designed for decades of exposure, anchored with mooring systems that accommodate changing water levels and wind loads while protecting the dam wall and banks. Marine-grade cabling and corrosion-resistant fittings handle the humid environment, and array layouts preserve access for maintenance and water management. Where a site has an existing pump station, treatment plant or hydro connection, generation can be consumed right where it is produced.
Where floating solar shines
- Higher yield thanks to natural water cooling of the modules
- Reduced evaporation, preserving precious water in irrigation and supply reservoirs
- Suppressed algal growth from shading, supporting cleaner stored water
- No competition for arable or developable land
- Easy pairing with existing pumps, treatment plants and hydro infrastructure
Floating arrays slot neatly into the connected energy network. A reservoir beside a town can power local water pumping by day and feed surplus into the community grid, while co-located batteries firm the supply for evening demand. Hybrid sites that combine floating solar with existing hydro are especially powerful, blending instant solar abundance with the dispatchable flexibility of stored water.
As land grows scarce and water grows precious, floating solar answers both challenges at once. It is a graceful, double-duty technology, generating clean energy while safeguarding the very water our communities depend on. Talk to Helios Horizon about your reservoir or dam, and let us help your still water shimmer with clean, shared power for decades to come.
Floating Solar questions
Designed responsibly, floating solar can benefit water bodies by reducing evaporation and algal blooms. We limit coverage to protect oxygen levels and aquatic life, and use non-toxic, recyclable materials suited to sensitive environments.
The cooling effect typically lifts annual generation by around 5 to 15 per cent compared with equivalent land-based panels, depending on climate and how close the modules sit to the water surface. Hotter regions tend to see the largest gains.
Calm, human-made or managed water works best, including irrigation dams, drinking-water reservoirs, quarry lakes, mine voids and treatment ponds. We assess depth, water-level variation, wind exposure and proximity to demand before recommending a design.
