The humble switchboard rarely earns a second glance — until it trips at the worst possible moment, or until a property inspection reveals a ceramic fusebox that pre-dates colour television. Meter Board and Main Switchboard Replacement

Ceramic fuse-wire boards, obsolete Clipsal or Merlin Gerin panelboards, and meter enclosures in poor condition all represent safety risks and practical limitations. VoltCity Surge replaces these with modern enclosures rated for the incoming supply voltage and fault level, fitted with moulded-case circuit breakers (MCCBs) or miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) of the correct breaking capacity for the available prospective short-circuit current. All main switchboard work is co-ordinated with the network distributor for service line de-energisation and re-energisation.

RCBO Installation and Circuit Protection

Residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection (RCBOs) offer per-circuit protection against both earth leakage and overcurrent faults — superior to the common arrangement of shared RCDs protecting groups of circuits. When a single RCBO trips, only the affected circuit de-energises; the rest of the installation keeps running. Surge Protection and Power Quality

Transient overvoltages from lightning strikes and switching events in the distribution network destroy sensitive electronics — including smart home hubs, inverters, VSD drives, and HVAC controllers — without warning. Installing a surge protection device (SPD) at the main switchboard in accordance with AS 1768 provides a first line of defence that clamps transient voltage spikes before they propagate through the building's circuits. For facilities with sensitive loads, we specify co-ordinated Type 1/Type 2 SPD arrangements that provide protection at both the service entry and at sub-boards adjacent to critical equipment.

Smart Metering and Energy Monitoring

Modern smart meters do far more than record kilowatt-hours. Combined with energy monitoring software, they provide interval data at 5- or 15-minute resolution, revealing peak demand patterns, power factor performance, and the impact of individual loads on your bill. Solar and Battery-Ready Switchboard Design

Adding solar PV or a battery energy storage system (BESS) to an existing installation requires a switchboard configured to accommodate the inverter's dedicated circuit, anti-islanding protection, and — for battery systems — the appropriate changeover provisions for backup power modes. Do I need a switchboard upgrade to add solar panels?

Not always, but often. A solar PV inverter requires a dedicated circuit with appropriate overcurrent protection and, for larger systems, may require a check of the main switch and busbar ratings. If your current board is a fuse-wire type or lacks adequate capacity, upgrading it as part of the solar installation is the correct approach and will be required by the network distributor as a condition of connection approval.

What is the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

A residual current device (RCD) detects earth-leakage current and trips to protect people from electrocution, but provides no overcurrent protection. An RCBO combines RCD and MCB functions in a single device, protecting one circuit from both earth leakage and overload or short-circuit faults. RCBOs cost more but provide superior fault isolation because tripping one RCBO only removes power from a single circuit rather than all circuits on a shared RCD.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A residential meter board replacement typically takes four to six hours including DNSP co-ordination for the service-line outage window. A commercial main switchboard replacement, particularly where a temporary supply arrangement is required to maintain critical loads, may take one to three days. We provide a detailed project programme and outage notification before any work begins.

Is a compliance certificate required for switchboard work?

Yes. All electrical work in Australia, including switchboard upgrades, requires a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) issued by the licensed electrician responsible for the work. The CCEW is required for insurance purposes, property transactions, and regulatory inspections. VoltCity Surge issues a CCEW for every job as a matter of course — we will never ask you to waive this requirement.
