Not every car wants to be restored. Some have earned their patina — the soft, honest wear of decades — and to strip it away would be to erase the very thing that makes them special. For these cars, and for any vehicle that has been laid up for years, recommissioning is the answer: the careful, methodical process of making a car safe, reliable and usable again while leaving its character untouched.
A barn-find arrives with its own set of risks. Fuel turns to varnish, brake fluid absorbs water and corrodes from the inside, rubber perishes, rodents make homes in looms and seats. Simply turning the key on such a car is, at best, disappointing and, at worst, dangerous. We never do it. Instead we work through the car system by system, in a deliberate order, so that nothing is asked of a component until it is fit to be asked.
Safety before nostalgia
The romance of firing up a long-dormant engine is real, but it comes second to doing things correctly. We begin with the fundamentals: the fuel system drained and cleaned, the cooling system flushed, the brakes and clutch fully overhauled, the wiring inspected for perished insulation, the oil and filters renewed. Only when a car will stop reliably do we concern ourselves with making it go.

- Fuel system drain, clean and refresh; tank treatment or renewal as needed
- Complete brake and clutch hydraulic overhaul for safe road use
- Cooling system flush, hose renewal and water-pump assessment
- Engine pre-oiling, fresh fluids, ignition service and careful first start
- Tyres, wheel bearings and steering checked and made roadworthy
- Electrical safety check and selective, sympathetic repair
Preserving the patina
The art of recommissioning lies in restraint. We clean rather than refinish, conserve rather than replace, and intervene only where safety or function demands it.
