A hybrid is two vehicles in one. There is the familiar combustion engine with its oil, belts and exhaust, and there is a sophisticated high-voltage electric system with its own battery, inverter, electric motors and control logic — and the two are woven together by software that decides, moment to moment, which should be driving the wheels. A traditional mechanic can service the engine but is not licensed or equipped to touch the high-voltage side; a generic auto-electrician rarely understands the hybrid control strategy.
