Paint & Bodywork

The finish everyone sees — and everyone judges.

Paint is the first thing anyone notices and the hardest thing to get right. A flawless finish starts long before the colour goes on — in straight panels, perfect gaps and obsessive surface preparation. We spend most of our paint hours on what you will never see, because that is what makes the final coat look wet from across the lot.

In our downdraft booth we lay everything from factory-correct single-stage enamels to modern basecoat-clearcoat, custom candies, pearls and house-of-kolor metallics — colour-sanded and buffed to a mirror.

From bare metal to mirror

Every paint job at Detroit Iron is built on a foundation of straight steel. We block the body by hand until the reflections run dead-straight, prime with quality epoxy and high-build, and seal it properly so the finish lasts decades, not seasons.

  • Hand block-sanding to laser-straight panels
  • Epoxy primer, high-build and sealer systems
  • Factory-correct single-stage and modern two-pack
  • Custom candy, pearl, metallic and flake finishes
  • Colour-sand and machine buff to a deep gloss
  • Engine bay, jamb and underbody detailing

Colour-matched and built to last

We can match an original factory code, recreate a faded heritage hue, or mix something entirely your own. Whatever the colour, it is applied in a filtered, temperature-controlled booth and cured properly so it holds its depth and shine for the long haul.

Common Questions

Why is a quality respray so expensive?

The cost is in the preparation. A show finish can take well over a hundred hours of bodywork before any colour is sprayed. That labour is what separates a real paint job from a quick blow-over.

Can you match my original colour?

Yes — from the factory paint code, an original panel, or by custom-matching a sample. We can also subtly modernise a heritage shade if you prefer.

Single-stage or base/clear?

Single-stage suits a period-correct restoration; base/clear gives more depth and durability. We will recommend based on your goals.
