Lost a filling? We'll seal it up

A filling that falls out leaves a sensitive hole where bacteria and food collect. It's rarely an emergency, but the sooner we re-fill it, the simpler the fix — and the more of your tooth we keep.

Lost Fillings — Rapid Response Dental Care

What to do right now

  1. Keep the area clean — rinse after eating.
  2. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  3. Use temporary filling paste from a pharmacy if sharp.
  4. Manage sensitivity by avoiding hot, cold and sweet foods.
  5. Book a replacement filling soon.

Fillings do a hard job — they take the full force of chewing, day after day, for years. Eventually some give way: the bond ages, the tooth around it flexes, or new decay loosens the edge until the filling drops out, often while you're eating. You might notice a sudden gap with your tongue, a rough edge, a jolt of sensitivity to cold and sweet, or simply find the filling in your food. It's seldom painful, but it does need attention before the exposed tooth deteriorates.

Why a lost filling matters

The cavity a filling leaves behind is a sheltered pocket where food packs in and bacteria thrive. Without the seal of a filling, decay can advance surprisingly fast, and the unsupported walls of the tooth become more likely to crack. What would have been a simple replacement filling can, if left for weeks, turn into a need for a crown or root canal. Acting promptly is the easiest way to keep the fix small, quick and affordable.

Managing it until your appointment

Keep the area as clean as you can, rinsing with warm water after meals to flush out trapped food, and try to chew on the other side. Pharmacies sell temporary filling material that can plug the hole and blunt a sharp edge for a few days — useful as a short-term measure, but not a replacement for proper care. If the tooth is sensitive, avoid very hot, cold and sugary foods, which tend to set it off.

How we restore the tooth

When you come in, we gently clean out the cavity, removing any decay that has crept in, and place a fresh filling that seals and rebuilds the tooth. Most of the time we use tooth-coloured composite that bonds to the tooth and disappears into your smile. If the cavity is large or the remaining tooth is weak, we may suggest a stronger restoration such as an inlay or crown to protect it for the long term. Either way, you'll leave with the tooth sealed, smooth and comfortable again.

  • Natural-looking tooth-coloured fillings
  • Decay cleaned out before re-sealing the tooth
  • Larger cavities reinforced with inlays or crowns
  • Prompt care that keeps the repair simple and affordable

A lost filling is a small problem that grows quietly. Call Rapid Response Dental Care and we'll re-seal the tooth before it has the chance to become something bigger.

Common questions

Usually not, but it shouldn't wait long. The exposed tooth decays and weakens, so a prompt replacement keeps the fix simple.

As a short-term patch, yes — it protects the cavity for a few days. But it isn't durable, so book a proper replacement soon.

Usually age, chewing forces, or fresh decay loosening the edges. We'll check why yours failed and rebuild the tooth to last.
