Brace trouble? Fast, gentle fixes
A poking wire or broken bracket can turn braces from helpful to unbearable overnight. We relieve the discomfort, repair the hardware and keep your treatment on track — no need to suffer until your next ortho visit.
What to do right now
- Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax.
- Gently tuck a long wire down with a clean cotton bud.
- Save any loose brackets or bands you find.
- Rinse with warm salt water for ulcers and soreness.
- Call us — don't cut wires yourself unless advised.
Braces and aligners do wonderful work, but the hardware can fail at the worst possible moment — a wire springs loose on a weekend, a bracket pops off mid-meal, or an aligner cracks the night before a trip. These problems are rarely dangerous, but they can be genuinely painful and worrying, especially if you fear losing the progress you've worked months to achieve. We see orthodontic emergencies quickly and put things right, whether or not we placed the braces ourselves.
Common brace emergencies
The most frequent issue is a wire that slips and digs into the cheek or gum, leaving sore spots and ulcers. Brackets can come loose from a tooth, bands can dislodge, and the small elastic ties can snap. With clear aligners, a cracked or lost tray can interrupt the sequence and let teeth drift. Sharp pain, bleeding, persistent ulcers or a piece you've swallowed are all good reasons to call rather than wait for your scheduled review.
Easing it at home
Orthodontic wax is your best friend — a small ball pressed over a poking wire or bracket shields the soft tissue and brings instant relief. A protruding wire can sometimes be gently guided back with the clean end of a cotton bud or a pencil eraser. Warm salt-water rinses soothe ulcers and keep the area clean, and over-the-counter pain relief helps with general soreness. Avoid cutting wires yourself unless we've advised it, and keep any loose brackets or bands to bring with you.
How we put it right
In the chair, we make you comfortable first, then repair the problem: trimming or repositioning an offending wire, re-bonding a loose bracket, replacing a band or tie, and checking that the forces on your teeth are correct so your treatment stays on schedule. If you wear aligners, we'll advise whether to move forward, drop back a tray or order a replacement. We'll also liaise with your orthodontist where needed, so everyone stays on the same page and your plan keeps moving.
