Cat6 and Cat6A structured cabling

We install Category 6 and Category 6A unshielded and shielded twisted-pair cabling — the current standard for residential and commercial structured cabling in Australia. Cat6 supports Gigabit Ethernet across runs up to 100 metres and is the right choice for most home environments. Cat6A extends that performance ceiling to 10-Gigabit Ethernet and is well worth specifying during a new build or major renovation, when the marginal cost of upgrading cable grade is far lower than re-running cables later. In environments with significant electromagnetic interference — near switchboards, ducted HVAC plant, or industrial equipment — we recommend shielded Cat6A to maintain signal integrity.

Every run is terminated into keystone jacks mounted in flush wall plates, keeping the finish consistent with your power points and light switches. Patch panels in your communications cabinet organise all incoming runs and allow the network layout to be changed without touching the in-wall cabling. This is structured cabling done properly — neat, documented, and ready for the next twenty years.

Network design and Wi-Fi access point placement

Cabling and wireless work best together. We design network layouts that position wired drops in the locations that matter most — home offices, lounge rooms, home theatres, kitchen benches, and security camera positions — while also providing wired backhaul connections for wireless access points. A hardwired access point connected at Gigabit speeds will always outperform a mesh unit relaying wirelessly. We work with leading access point brands and can advise on the number and placement of units to give consistent wireless coverage across your entire property, including outdoor entertaining areas and detached garages.

Every completed cable run is tested with a professional cable certifier that verifies insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, and delay skew against the relevant TIA-568 performance standard. You receive written test results for every run as part of the job documentation. This is not just best practice — it means that if a device ever fails to connect or underperforms, you have a verified baseline that rules out the cabling as the cause and saves hours of troubleshooting.

New builds and renovations — the right time to plan ahead

The most cost-effective time to install data cabling is during construction or renovation, when walls are open and cable can be run without cutting and patching plaster. We work alongside builders and other trades, coordinating cable routes to avoid conflicts with plumbing and air-conditioning and ensuring that comms cabinet locations are agreed on early. A little planning at the framing stage means you never end up with a network port in the wrong room or a wireless access point dangling from a surface-mount box because there was nowhere better to put it.

Is it worth installing Cat6A instead of Cat6 in a new home? +

For a new build or major renovation, Cat6A is worth the modest additional cost. The cable itself supports 10-Gigabit speeds and the improved shielding performs better in environments where multiple cables run in parallel over long distances. Consumer internet connections will catch up to these speeds over the coming decade, and re-running cables later is far more expensive and disruptive than specifying the better grade up front.

Can you install data cabling in an existing home without damaging the walls? +

Yes, in most cases. We use cavity walls, roof spaces, and sub-floor voids to run cable with minimal impact on finished surfaces. Where surface mounting is unavoidable — on brick or concrete walls, for example — we use slim PVC conduit painted to match. We will walk through the property with you before any work begins and explain the preferred route for each run.

Do I need a dedicated patch panel or can cables go directly into a switch? +

A patch panel is strongly recommended. It gives you a single, clearly labelled termination point for every cable run in the building, makes moves and changes easy without disturbing in-wall cables, and keeps your communications cabinet tidy. We install patch panels as standard on all structured cabling jobs, and every port is labelled to match the room or device it serves.
