Old ceramic fuse-holders, unlabelled wiring and a board that looks like it has not been touched in thirty years means it may be time for a conversation. Why older switchboards need attention

Switchboards installed before the mid 1990s were designed for far smaller electrical loads than modern homes demand. Back then a typical house had a handful of circuits and no air conditioners, induction cooktops, dishwashers or electric vehicle chargers. Ceramic fuse-holders provided rudimentary over-current protection but offered nothing in the way of earth fault protection, which means that a fault causing current to flow through a person would not be interrupted quickly enough to prevent serious injury or death. Modern residual current devices, commonly called safety switches or RCDs, change that equation entirely. They detect a leakage as small as 30 milliamps and disconnect the circuit within milliseconds.

Australian regulations have progressively mandated RCD protection for new work and new homes, and there is strong regulatory expectation that switchboards will be brought up to current standards when major electrical work is carried out. Even where no legal requirement applies, the upgrade is one of the most cost-effective safety investments you can make in a home.

The upgrade process, step by step

A switchboard upgrade is typically a half-day to full-day job depending on the size of the existing installation and the number of circuits involved. We begin with a careful assessment of the existing wiring, noting which circuits are in good condition and which have deteriorated or are not correctly sized. We then design the new board layout, source a quality enclosure and switchgear from reputable manufacturers, and schedule the work at a time that minimises disruption to your household. Power will be off for several hours on the day, and we plan this with you in advance. By the end of the day you will have a switchboard that is clean, safe, clearly labelled and certified.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker? +

A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit by interrupting the circuit when current exceeds its rated capacity. A safety switch, or RCD, monitors the difference between the current flowing out and returning on a circuit and trips within milliseconds if it detects an earth fault, such as current flowing through a person. Both are essential. Current regulations require RCD protection on all power and lighting circuits in new and upgraded switchboards.

My switchboard still has ceramic fuses. Is it dangerous? +

Ceramic fuses are not inherently dangerous if they have been correctly rated and maintained, but they offer no earth-fault protection and can be incorrectly rewired with the wrong fuse wire, which removes their overcurrent protection as well. More significantly, a ceramic-fuse board almost certainly has no safety switches. We recommend an assessment so we can give you an accurate picture of the risks specific to your installation rather than a blanket alarm.

How long will the power be off during an upgrade? +

For a typical residential switchboard upgrade, you can expect the power to be off for between four and eight hours. We plan the interruption to minimise impact, and for households where extended downtime is a concern we can sometimes stage the work. We will always give you a realistic timeframe before we begin so you can plan accordingly.
