Wiring & Safety

Help, the moment the lights go out

Electrical emergencies do not wait for business hours, and neither do we. Aura Illumination provides round-the-clock emergency response for faults, outages and hazards that simply cannot be left until morning.

An electrical emergency arrives without warning and brings with it a particular kind of unease. The power goes out, a switchboard trips and will not reset, there is a burning smell with no obvious source, or a power point sparks and goes dead. In those moments you need someone calm, competent and licensed who can be with you quickly. Aura Illumination operates an after-hours emergency line precisely because we know these situations do not respect the clock.

What counts as an electrical emergency

Not every electrical problem needs an emergency call-out, and we will always help you assess the situation over the phone before dispatching a technician. That said, some faults genuinely cannot be left. If you can smell burning from a switch, point or switchboard, if a safety switch keeps tripping as soon as it is reset, if you see scorch marks or evidence of arcing, if power is out in part of the home and you cannot identify why, or if you have any concern that there is an active fault that could cause a fire or electrocution, call us immediately. In situations involving exposed or damaged wiring, do not touch it. Isolate the area if you safely can and wait for our electrician to arrive.

Common genuine emergencies include total or partial power loss after a storm, safety switches that will not hold, failed circuits affecting medical equipment, burning smells from switchboards or in-wall wiring, and faults caused by appliance failure or rodent damage to cables. All of these benefit from fast, professional attention.

Our emergency response approach

  • Licensed electrician dispatched to your address, available around the clock every day of the year
  • Phone triage before dispatch to understand the nature of the fault and advise on immediate safety steps
  • Diagnostic tools including thermal imaging and RCD testing equipment carried on every vehicle
  • Temporary safe-off of hazardous circuits and reinstatement of supply where possible on the same visit
  • Clear written report of findings and recommended permanent repairs

Our emergency vehicles are stocked with common fault-finding equipment and a range of materials for temporary and permanent repairs. Many faults can be fully resolved on the first visit. Where the scope of repair requires additional materials or planning, we make the installation safe, restore supply where it is safe to do so, and schedule the follow-up work as a priority.

Keeping calm while we come to you

While you are waiting for our electrician, a few simple steps can help. Do not reset a safety switch that keeps tripping, as it is telling you that something is wrong on the circuit. If the trip is isolating power to your entire home and you cannot identify the offending appliance, try unplugging everything on the affected circuits and then resetting the switch. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time until it trips again. That isolates the faulty appliance without touching any wiring. If at any point you are unsure whether something is safe, leave it alone and let our electrician handle it when they arrive.

After the emergency is resolved

Once the immediate hazard is dealt with and supply is restored, we will walk you through exactly what we found and what we did. If the fault pointed to a broader issue, such as ageing wiring, a switchboard that lacks modern protection, or an appliance that needs replacing, we will explain that clearly and give you written options. We never use the urgency of an emergency call-out to pressure anyone into unnecessary work. Our job is to make your home safe and give you the information you need to make good decisions at your own pace.

Good to know

Is there a call-out fee for after-hours emergency work? +

Yes, after-hours and weekend call-outs attract a higher rate than standard business-hours work, and we will be transparent about this before we dispatch. The call-out fee covers travel and the first period of diagnostic time. Any materials and additional labour are quoted before work proceeds. We believe in honest pricing even in urgent situations.

Should I call the network distributor or an electrician when my power goes out? +

It depends on the nature of the outage. If the entire street or suburb is dark, the fault is on the distribution network and you should call your network provider. If neighbours have power but yours is off, or if only part of your home has lost power, the fault is likely within your property and you need a licensed electrician. If you are unsure, call us and we will help you work out who to contact.

What should I do if I smell burning from a power point or switch? +

Turn off the circuit at the switchboard if you can do so safely, or turn off the main switch if you are not sure which circuit is involved. Do not use the outlet or switch, and do not plug anything into nearby points until the fault has been diagnosed. Call us immediately. A burning smell indicates arcing or overheating that can lead to a fire, and it should always be treated as urgent.
