Reading the code is only half the job

A cheap code reader can tell you a fault code exists. It cannot tell you why. A code pointing at an oxygen sensor, for example, might mean the sensor has failed — or it might mean an air leak, a wiring fault or a fuelling problem is making a perfectly good sensor report bad readings. Replacing the part the code names, without diagnosing the cause, is how people end up paying for repairs that do not fix anything.
