Cooling Systems

Keep it cool, keep it alive

An overheating diesel is minutes away from catastrophic, expensive damage. We service and repair the entire cooling system — radiator, intercooler, pump, thermostat and coolant — so your engine stays in its happy range.

Cooling System Service

Heat is the enemy of a hard-working diesel. Pulling a heavy load up a long grade on a hot day, an engine generates enormous amounts of heat, and the cooling system is all that stands between normal operation and a temperature gauge climbing into the red. When it does climb, the clock starts ticking on serious damage — warped heads, blown head gaskets, cracked blocks and seized engines are all on the menu if a driver pushes on instead of stopping. A cooling fault is one of the few problems that can turn a minor repair into a complete engine failure in a matter of minutes.

We service and repair the entire cooling system as a system, not a collection of parts. The radiator, the intercooler, the water pump, the thermostat, the fan and fan clutch, the hoses, the coolant itself and the pressure cap all have to work together, and a weakness in any one of them puts the whole engine at risk. We pressure-test for leaks, check coolant condition and concentration, inspect for the internal blockages and external clogging that quietly choke cooling capacity, and put it all right before the temperature gauge tells you the hard way.

Find the leak before it finds you

Most overheating starts as a slow loss of coolant that a busy operator tops up and forgets about — until the day it lets go properly. A weeping hose, a seeping water pump, a tired radiator or a head gasket just starting to fail all leave clues long before they cause a roadside breakdown. We pressure-test the system to find leaks while they are still small and cheap, and we use combustion-gas testing to detect the early signs of a head gasket problem before it strands a truck and wrecks an engine.

Clean coolant is cheap insurance

Coolant is not a fill-and-forget fluid. Over time it loses its corrosion inhibitors, turns acidic and starts eating the very components it is meant to protect — radiators, water pumps and the engine's internal passages. Old, neglected coolant is one of the most common causes of premature cooling-system failure in hard-working trucks. A scheduled flush and refill with the correct coolant for your engine is some of the cheapest insurance you can buy against a five-figure engine bill.

Cooling System Service questions

It can be the first sign of a cooling fault — a tired radiator, failing water pump, sticking thermostat or low coolant. It's worth checking promptly, because overheating can destroy an engine quickly.

Coolant should be tested regularly and changed at the manufacturer's interval. Old coolant loses its corrosion protection and starts damaging the system, so a scheduled flush is cheap insurance.

Often, yes. Depending on the condition we can repair or recore a radiator, which can be more economical than replacement. We'll assess it and give you the honest options.
