Oral pathology is the branch of maxillofacial surgery concerned with diagnosing and managing diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, salivary glands and surrounding soft tissues. This includes lumps, ulcers, white or red patches, cysts and other lesions that may be benign, inflammatory or, occasionally, more serious.

Many oral lesions are entirely harmless, but because some conditions require early intervention, professional assessment is always worthwhile. Recognising changes promptly and investigating them properly is the most reliable path to peace of mind.

Accurate diagnosis comes first

Assessment begins with a careful clinical examination and a detailed history. Where appropriate, we use 3D cone-beam imaging to evaluate the jaws and adjacent structures, and a biopsy may be recommended so that a small tissue sample can be examined under the microscope.

Biopsy is the most dependable way to reach a definitive diagnosis. Most are minor procedures performed in clinic under local anaesthesia, and we explain each step beforehand so you know exactly what to expect and why it is being done.
