IP-Rated Fittings, Weatherproof Circuits and Australian Conditions
Australia's climate imposes demands on exterior electrical installations that are not negotiable. UV radiation, temperature extremes, humidity, coastal salt air and the ingress of insects, dust and moisture collectively challenge every component of an outdoor circuit. Apex Current Solutions specifies IP-rated fittings appropriate to the exposure of each location: IP65 as a minimum for most garden applications, IP67 and IP68 for in-ground and submerged installations, and marine-grade stainless or powder-coated aluminium for coastal environments. We will not install fittings that are inadequate for the conditions, because the failure and remediation costs always exceed the initial cost premium of specifying correctly.
Weatherproof circuits are laid in UV-stabilised conduit buried at compliant depths under AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, with above-ground conduit and fittings rated for the UV exposure they will experience. Junction boxes are sealed and elevated where possible to prevent water ingress, and cable entries into fittings are correctly made with appropriate gland types for the ingress-protection rating of the fitting. This level of installation discipline is what separates a system that performs for twenty years from one that requires repeated remediation in the first five.

In-ground fittings subject to water pooling require at least IP67, submerged fittings require IP68, and general garden fittings in rain-exposed locations require a minimum of IP65. Apex Current Solutions selects and documents IP ratings for every fitting we install, and will not use fittings that are inadequate for their location.
Yes, and it is the configuration we recommend for any property with an automation platform already installed. Exterior lighting zones are added to the automation programming alongside interior zones, allowing the two to respond to the same scenes, schedules and sensors. This means a single command, such as activating an entertaining or security scene, can simultaneously adjust interior and exterior areas in a way that reflects the intended atmosphere rather than requiring separate manual switching.
AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules prescribe minimum burial depths for underground cables, which vary depending on cable type, conduit type and the risk of mechanical damage at the specific location. As a general position, we install underground wiring for exterior lighting in rigid UV-stabilised conduit buried at least 300mm below finished grade in trafficked areas, and we document the routing on as-built drawings to enable future safe excavation. Non-compliant shallow burial is one of the most common deficiencies in amateur exterior lighting work.
We design and install both. Low-voltage systems, typically 12V AC or DC, are well suited to path and garden lighting because they use physically smaller fittings, are safer in proximity to irrigation systems and allow fitting changes without isolating a mains circuit. We size and install the ELV transformers correctly, manage cable voltage-drop across the landscape cabling runs and document the system fully so the low-voltage installation is as professionally executed as any mains installation we carry out.
