The switchboard is the safety heart of every electrical installation. It is the point at which energy entering a building is distributed, protected and isolated, and the condition of that equipment determines how effectively every circuit downstream performs and how safely every person in the building is protected. Apex Current Solutions specialises in the replacement and upgrade of switchboards that no longer meet the requirements of AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, from obsolete ceramic-fuse boards and asbestos-backed panels to enclosures that have simply been outgrown by the loads placed on them.

An outdated switchboard is not merely a compliance matter. Ceramic fuses offer no protection against earth leakage or current overload in the way that a correctly specified circuit breaker and RCD combination does. Asbestos-backed panels create a remediation liability that compounds with every year that work in or around the board is deferred. Undersized main switches and inadequate fault-current ratings expose the installation to risks that are invisible in normal operation but catastrophic in a fault condition. Modern Protection Devices Engineered for Your Load Profile

A switchboard upgrade is the opportunity to equip every circuit in the installation with protection precisely matched to its load and sensitivity requirements. Where a blanket RCD across an entire installation creates nuisance tripping from a single fault, individual RCBOs at circuit level provide both residual-current and overcurrent protection independently on each circuit, so a fault on one does not interrupt others. This is the configuration we recommend for kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor circuits and any wiring serving critical or sensitive equipment.

Surge-protective devices are a standard inclusion in our upgraded boards, guarding sensitive electronics and appliances against voltage transients that enter through the supply conductors. As homes and businesses accumulate greater densities of connected equipment, the damage potential of an uncontrolled transient grows accordingly. A properly rated surge protector installed at the main board is the most economical insurance available for that equipment inventory, and it is specified and installed correctly, not added as an afterthought.

Three-Phase Boards, Sub-Boards and Load Balancing

For properties running three-phase supplies, whether a large home, a commercial tenancy or an industrial site, the switchboard must distribute load intelligently across all three phases to prevent neutral overloading and maximise the efficiency of the supply. Apex Current Solutions designs three-phase boards with careful load-balancing analysis, ensuring that high-draw circuits such as EV chargers, large air-conditioning systems and industrial machinery are allocated to phases in a way that keeps the supply stable and the metering correct.

We also manage the integration of sub-boards for extended installations where a single main board cannot economically serve remote areas of a building or site. Sub-board design requires accurate discrimination engineering to ensure that a fault on a downstream circuit is isolated by the correct protective device without causing unnecessary upstream tripping. This discrimination is frequently poorly executed in older installations, and we identify and correct it as part of a wider upgrade scope wherever it is encountered.

Switchboard Upgrades — your questions answered

Yes, in several respects. Ceramic fuses provide no earth-leakage protection, they can be replaced with incorrectly rated fuse wire that removes even overcurrent protection, and the wiring and connections in boards of that era frequently show insulation deterioration. Until a compliant board with proper RCD protection is installed, occupants are exposed to shock and fire risks that are entirely avoidable.

The work must be carried out by electricians holding appropriate asbestos awareness and removal accreditations, following a safe work method statement that manages fibre containment and disposal in compliance with Work Health and Safety regulations. We coordinate the asbestos removal component and the electrical installation as a single project with proper WHS documentation, so there is one accountable contractor and one compliant outcome.

An RCD protects multiple circuits against earth leakage but does not provide overcurrent protection and will trip all circuits it covers if a single earth fault occurs on any of them. An RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection in a single device at individual circuit level, so a fault on one circuit is isolated without affecting any other. We recommend RCBO protection as the superior configuration for most installations.
