A snorkel is one of the most worthwhile upgrades on any touring vehicle, and not only for crossing water. By lifting the air intake to roof height, a snorkel draws cleaner, cooler and drier air than the factory intake down in the guard, which is exactly what your engine wants. On dusty outback tracks it dramatically reduces the fine dust reaching your air filter, extending filter life and protecting the engine from the abrasive grit that wears out a motor early.

We fit Safari and other quality raised air intakes, matched to your vehicle and sealed correctly. The benefit only holds if the whole intake path is airtight, so we replace or re-seal the connection to the airbox and make sure there are no leaks downstream where dusty or wet air could bypass the snorkel. A poorly fitted snorkel that leaks at the guard is worse than none, and getting the seal right is where experience matters. We pressure check the install where we can and confirm every joint from the head to the filter is sealed, because a single gap upstream of the filter lets in the abrasive dust the snorkel was supposed to keep out.

Water crossings done safely

When you face a water crossing, the snorkel raises the point at which your engine would ingest water, which is critical because water drawn into a cylinder cannot compress and will bend a conrod or worse, an instant and catastrophic engine failure known as hydraulic lock. A correctly sealed snorkel buys you the height to cross safely, but it is only part of the picture. We also extend and reroute diff, gearbox and transfer case breathers so water cannot be sucked into those housings as they cool in the crossing.

Sealed airbox and pre-cleaners

Beyond the snorkel itself, we make sure your airbox seals fully so all intake air passes through the filter, and we can fit a pre-cleaner head that spins heavier dust out before it ever reaches the filter. On long dusty trips a pre-cleaner can multiply your filter life and keep airflow strong. Clean breathing means consistent power, better economy and a longer engine life, which all add up on a remote trip far from the nearest workshop. We can also upgrade to a high-quality air filter element that traps fine dust without strangling airflow, the right balance for outback touring.

Fitted to last and look right

A snorkel involves cutting the guard, so it has to be done with care to seal properly and look factory-fitted. We template and cut precisely, prime any bare metal to prevent rust, and mount the body securely so it does not flex or whistle at speed. The head is positioned to draw the cleanest air and can be turned away from heavy dust where the design allows. Done well, a snorkel is one of those modifications that looks like it always belonged on the vehicle and quietly protects the engine for the life of the rig. Done poorly, it leaks, rattles and lets in the very dust it was meant to keep out, which is why the fit matters as much as the part.
