Full and partial rewires — when old wiring reaches its limit
Pre-1980s homes across Australia were frequently wired with Vulcanised India Rubber (VIR) cable — a product that has a finite service life and deteriorates into a crumbling, brittle insulation layer that poses a genuine fire and electrocution risk. Even mid-era Thermoplastic-Sheathed (TPS) wiring can suffer insulation breakdown, rodent damage, and overloaded circuits from decades of additional load. Our inspection process starts with a visual survey of your switchboard, a check of circuit continuity and insulation resistance with a calibrated Megger, and a frank conversation about what we find. If a partial rewire can safely solve the problem, we will tell you. If the whole house needs new cable, we will tell you that too — and we will not talk you into more than the situation demands.
A full rewire of a three-bedroom home typically runs two to five working days depending on access, ceiling type, and the number of circuits. We work cleanly — dust sheets down, plasterboard holes kept to a minimum, penetrations made good before we leave. Your home is a home, not a construction site, and we treat it accordingly.
New construction and owner-builder projects
Rough-in wiring for new builds demands a licensed electrician who can read a set of plans and co-ordinate with the building sequence — not someone who shows up whenever suits them. SynthWire works alongside builders and owner-builders on first-fix cabling (sub-board, circuits, outlet and light positions), temporary construction supply, and final fit-off once plasterboard is set and painted. We attend inspections with your certifying authority and handle any notifiable works submissions to the DNSP so you are not navigating the paperwork maze alone.
RCDs, safety switches, and modern protection
Under current Australian wiring regulations, all new and rewired residential installations must include residual current devices (RCDs) on every power and lighting circuit. If your home still has a fuseboard with ceramic rewireable fuses — or a first-generation safety-switch installation covering only one or two circuits — your family is not receiving the level of protection modern standards require. During any rewire, you receive a fully compliant installation as a matter of course.
Future-proofing: EV charging, solar, and high-draw appliances
A house wired for the 1980s was never designed to carry a 7kW EV charger, a ducted reverse-cycle system, an induction cooktop, and a solar inverter simultaneously. When we design your circuits, we do it for the loads you have now and the loads you are likely to add in the next ten to fifteen years. That means correctly-rated cables, appropriately-sized circuit breakers, and a sub-board layout that has room to grow. We install dedicated EV charging circuits (Mode 2 and Mode 3 infrastructure), solar and battery inverter supply circuits, and three-phase metering upgrades for homes that need the capacity. Future-proofing is not expensive when it is done during a rewire. Retrofitting it later is.

Warning signs include frequently tripping circuit breakers, flickering lights, discolouration or scorch marks near outlets, a fuseboard with rewireable ceramic fuses, and a home built before 1980 that has never had its wiring assessed. A formal insulation resistance test with a calibrated Megger instrument is the only reliable way to quantify cable condition. In most established homes we can pull new cable through existing cavities using fish tapes and flexible drill bits, limiting penetrations to junction-box and outlet positions. Homes with concrete slab construction, tiled ceilings, or unusual framing require more access points, and we will be upfront about that during the quote walk-through. All penetrations are made good before we leave the site.
Yes. Any notifiable electrical work in Australia — which includes new circuits, switchboard modifications, and rewires — must be certified by a licensed electrical contractor and a Certificate of Compliance lodged with the relevant DNSP. Unlicensed or uncertified electrical work is illegal, voids building insurance, and creates liability for the homeowner. Every SynthWire job is fully certified as standard.
