The promise of a smart home has been floating around since the 1980s, and for most of that time it delivered more frustration than convenience. Proprietary hubs that stopped receiving updates. For those projects, KNX and Clipsal C-Bus remain the gold standard: wired bus topologies that run independently of your internet connection, support thousands of devices, and have a global ecosystem of certified integrators and replacement parts. Every device on a KNX or C-Bus network communicates on its own dedicated cable run, which means a failure in one segment does not cascade across the system.

For mid-range residential projects, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and the newer Matter/Thread standard have matured significantly. These mesh-network protocols use your existing home as the communication backbone, with each device acting as a repeater to extend coverage. SynthWire specifies and installs dedicated Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinators on your home network — proper hardware, not a cheap USB dongle taped to a router — and designs device placement so the mesh has redundant paths throughout the building. Where Wi-Fi-based devices are unavoidable, we ensure they land on a dedicated IoT VLAN that keeps smart home traffic off your main network and isolates any misbehaving device from your computers and phones.

Works without the internet

A reliable smart home should not stop working because your ISP is having a bad day.
