Performance Monitoring and Loss Analysis

Apex Grid's monitoring platform ingests inverter telemetry, string-level current data, on-site irradiance and temperature measurements, and grid export records at 5-minute intervals. Our performance analysis engine compares actual generation against a modelled energy yield baseline derived from PVsyst simulation, real-time irradiance data, and equipment performance specifications. Deviations above a defined threshold trigger automated alerts for engineering review. We distinguish between weather-driven under-performance, soiling losses, shading events, inverter faults, and module degradation — because each requires a different response and has a different priority in the maintenance schedule. The performance baseline matters as much as the monitoring. Apex Grid establishes a site-specific PVsyst energy yield model calibrated against your array's actual orientation, tilt, module specifications, and local shading geometry at the commencement of every O&M contract. All O&M contracts include scheduled preventive maintenance visits, unlimited corrective maintenance callouts within SLA response windows, and annual thermal imaging surveys as standard inclusions. We do not use tiered response structures that leave your lowest-priority callout waiting weeks for a site visit. Every fault on an operating solar installation is degrading your financial return — it gets a response under contract, not a place in a queue. How do you detect performance losses that are not triggering inverter fault alarms?
Most significant performance losses — soiling, partial shading, module degradation, and connection resistance — do not trip inverter faults. They appear only as reductions in DC input current or energy yield relative to irradiance-corrected expectations. Our monitoring platform compares actual string currents against modelled baselines at every 5-minute interval and flags deviations above a configurable threshold for engineering review. Annual thermal imaging surveys then provide a physical map of the array that identifies cell-level faults invisible to electrical monitoring.
What is a Performance Ratio and why does it matter for our installation?
Performance Ratio (PR) is the ratio of actual energy output to the theoretically possible output given the measured solar irradiance on your array — expressed as a percentage and calculated in accordance with IEC 61724. It is the standard metric for comparing solar plant performance independent of location and weather. A new, well-commissioned system should achieve PR above 80%. If your system is operating at PR of 72–75% and you do not know why, you are leaving significant generation — and revenue — on the table. Our O&M monitoring establishes your PR baseline and tracks it continuously.
Can Apex Grid take over O&M for a system originally installed and maintained by another contractor?
Yes. We conduct a transition inspection that includes a full electrical audit, inverter fault log review, monitoring platform assessment, and thermal imaging survey before assuming contractual O&M responsibility. This establishes a documented baseline condition for the system at handover and protects both parties from disputes over pre-existing faults. We then migrate monitoring to our platform, establish the PVsyst performance model, and commence contracted O&M services from the transition date.
