Network infrastructure that fails or underperforms costs more to fix than it would have cost to build correctly the first time. Poorly terminated patch panels, cable runs that exceed the 90-metre permanent link limit, unmanaged bundles pinched under raised flooring, and untested links that introduce excessive crosstalk are all common in low-cost data cabling jobs. These problems are invisible until the network goes live, at which point they manifest as slow speeds, intermittent drops, and fault-finding costs that far outweigh the original saving.

Every link is tested with a calibrated cable certifier and the test results are documented in a certification report that you receive on practical completion. That report is your evidence that the cabling system performs to specification and is the starting point for any future troubleshooting.

Cat6 and Cat6A for offices and commercial fit-outs

Cat6 cabling supports 1GbE networking up to 100 metres and is appropriate for most office fit-out applications. Where 10GbE to the desktop is required — for video editing workstations, high-throughput server connections, or future-proofing a high-density office — Cat6A is the right choice. Cat6A has tighter construction tolerances, heavier shielding or larger pair separation, and supports 10GbE to the full 100-metre channel length. It is larger and more difficult to terminate well, which is why the quality of the installer matters as much as the cable specification.

For office fit-outs, we typically work from the comms room or comms cabinet outward: rack or cabinet installation, patch panel mounting, horizontal cable runs to each workstation outlet, face plate termination, and patch lead installation at both the rack and desk end. We coordinate with the builder on floor penetrations and cable tray routing before walls are closed, so changes are variations on paper rather than demolished plasterboard.

Comms racks, patch panels, and structured cabling infrastructure

The comms room or comms cabinet is the centre of the cabling system. A well-built comms rack organises patch panels, active equipment, and power distribution so that moves, adds, and changes can be made quickly and without creating a tangle that nobody wants to touch. Fibre optic backbone and inter-building links

Cat6 and Cat6A have a maximum channel length of 100 metres. For multi-storey commercial buildings, large warehouse or industrial facilities, or campus environments where buildings need to be connected, fibre optic cabling is required for the backbone. Multimode OM3 or OM4 fibre handles most commercial applications at distances up to 300 metres at 10GbE. Where longer runs or higher bandwidth are needed, single-mode fibre has essentially no practical distance limitation.

MetroPulse Electric installs and terminates fibre using fusion splicing or pre-terminated assemblies depending on the application. We test fibre links with an OTDR and optical power meter and include the test results in the certification report alongside the copper link data. For strata buildings upgrading from distributed antenna to a centralised fibre backbone, or for commercial tenants requiring a high-speed link between floors, we provide a complete scope and manage the cable containment pathways as part of the job.

Strata building data cabling and telecommunications infrastructure

Strata and body corporate buildings have telecommunications infrastructure obligations that individual tenants rarely think about until a new tenant moves in and the comms room is a mess of unlabelled cables going nowhere. MetroPulse Electric carries out data cabling audits for strata buildings, produces as-built documentation for existing infrastructure, and plans upgrade paths that serve the building over the medium term rather than just patching the immediate problem.

For new strata developments, we scope the telecommunications infrastructure during the design phase — backbone pathways, riser conduits, comms room sizing, and provision for carrier services — so that the builder allows for it in the construction programme. Retrospective telecommunications upgrades in occupied buildings are significantly more costly and disruptive than work done at fit-out stage.

Cat6 supports 1GbE to 100 metres and is adequate for most standard office applications. Cat6A supports 10GbE to the same distance and has tighter electrical performance specifications that provide headroom for future network upgrades. For most new office fit-outs, Cat6A is the better long-term investment because the difference in material cost is modest relative to the total fit-out spend, while the cost of recabling to Cat6A after the walls are closed is very high. Certification means each cabling link is tested with a calibrated Fluke or equivalent cable certifier against the performance parameters defined in AS/NZS 3080 — including insertion loss, near-end crosstalk, return loss, and propagation delay. A certified link has documented proof that it meets the standard, not just an assumption that it was installed correctly. The test report is your assurance that the cabling will support the network equipment that relies on it, and it is the first tool any IT contractor will reach for when troubleshooting a network problem years down the track.

Data cabling should be roughed in after services are coordinated in the ceiling but before the ceiling is closed. Cable trays and conduit should be installed before mechanical and HVAC runs occupy all the ceiling space. If we are involved before the builder finalises the ceiling services layout, we can coordinate containment pathways so cabling does not end up routed around obstacles. The floor penetrations between levels need to be confirmed early — those openings need to be in the slab or core-drilled before partitions and finished walls go up around them.
