Most homes and offices are lit by a single layer — a grid of downlights or a central pendant that floods every surface with the same undifferentiated illumination. Functional, but rarely comfortable, flattering, or suited to the range of activities a space serves across the day. Our lighting design process begins with a site visit and a brief that captures how each space is actually used — not just what it contains. Layered Lighting: Ambient, Task, and Accent

A properly designed lighting scheme uses three distinct layers working in concert. Ambient lighting provides the general illumination that fills a room — achieved through recessed downlights, cove lighting, or indirect LED strips that bounce light off ceilings and walls. Task lighting concentrates higher-intensity illumination where precise visual work happens: kitchen benchtops, desks, bathroom vanities, and reading nooks. Colour temperature — measured in Kelvin — has a profound and well-documented effect on alertness, mood, and sleep quality. Cool white light at 5000–6500K suppresses melatonin production and promotes focus, making it appropriate for workspaces and task areas used during the day. Warm white light at 2700–3000K supports relaxation and is suited to living areas, bedrooms, and hospitality environments. Dimming Systems and Scene Control

A lighting circuit that can only be fully on or fully off is one that will always be either too bright or dark. Starwatt installs leading-edge and trailing-edge dimmer systems matched to the specific LED driver technology in each fitting — incorrect dimmer selection is the primary cause of flicker, buzzing, and premature LED driver failure. For more sophisticated control, we integrate with DALI, Lutron, and KNX dimming infrastructures, and with smart-home platforms including Control4, Crestron, and Apple HomeKit. Scene control allows a single keypad press or voice command to transition a room from 'morning coffee' to 'dinner party' to 'movie' without manually adjusting a single switch.

Commercial Lighting Design

Commercial lighting carries an energy cost that residential schemes do not. A medium-sized office with poorly specified downlights can consume 15–20 watts per square metre on lighting alone; a well-designed LED scheme with occupancy and daylight sensing typically achieves 4–8 watts per square metre against the same illuminance target. As a general rule: 2700–3000K for living areas, bedrooms, and hospitality spaces where warmth and relaxation are the goal; 3500–4000K for kitchens and home offices where task performance matters; 5000K and above for garages and workshops. If you are unsure, we recommend tunable-white fittings that let you adjust across the range after installation until you find the right setting for each space.

Flickering and buzzing on dimmed LEDs almost always indicate a mismatch between the dimmer module and the LED driver technology inside the fitting. LEDs require either leading-edge or trailing-edge dimming depending on their driver design, and many older dimmer switches are incompatible with modern LED loads. Starwatt will identify the correct dimmer type for your specific fittings and replace any incompatible modules — resolving the issue permanently.
