Switchboard Upgrades That Protect Your Property

An ageing switchboard is the single greatest electrical safety risk in most Australian homes and businesses. The switchboard is the heart of every electrical installation. Every circuit in your home or business originates there, and every protective device that stands between a fault and a fire lives there. Yet the switchboards fitted in Australian properties built before 2000 were designed for a fraction of the load those properties now carry, and many still use ceramic fuse wire as their only overcurrent protection — a technology that has not been installed in new work for over thirty years.

Ceramic Fuse Replacement

Homes with ceramic fuse boards have protection devices that can be defeated by any resident with a piece of fuse wire — or worse, replaced with wire of the wrong gauge that provides no meaningful protection at all. Ceramic fuses also do not provide earth-leakage (RCD) protection, which means a person contacting a live conductor has no automatic disconnection within the 30-millisecond response time required to prevent electrocution. Replacing a ceramic fuse board with a modern unit fitted with RCBOs eliminates both risks in a single installation.

Three-Phase Switchboard Upgrades

Properties with three-phase supply — most commercial premises and an increasing number of residential properties with solar inverters, EV chargers, or three-phase air conditioning — require a switchboard designed for balanced three-phase distribution. Starwatt upgrades three-phase boards to accommodate additional phase-balanced loads, installs correctly rated three-phase protection devices, and verifies phase rotation on all three-phase equipment after the upgrade is complete.

Load Capacity Expansion

Many older switchboards have simply run out of circuit breaker positions before the property has run out of load requirements. Adding an EV charger circuit, a second air conditioner, a workshop supply, or a solar battery inverter connection to a full switchboard is not possible without either expanding the board or installing a sub-board. Starwatt assesses your current switchboard capacity, your incoming service cable rating, and the network distributor's metered supply limit, then designs the most cost-effective path to the additional capacity you need.

Surge Protection Devices

Voltage transients from lightning, network switching, and the switching of large inductive loads can destroy sensitive electronics instantly and degrade others cumulatively over months. A Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) installed at the switchboard clamps transient overvoltages before they can propagate into your building's wiring. Starwatt selects and installs SPDs to AS/NZS 61643-11, sized correctly for the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation and rated for the local lightning exposure level.

Switchboard Upgrades questions

A standard residential switchboard upgrade — replacing a ceramic fuse board with a modern RCBO-fitted enclosure — takes four to six hours for most homes. The supply to the property is isolated for the duration of the switchboard changeover, which is typically one to two hours. We schedule upgrades to minimise inconvenience and confirm the outage window with you before starting.

Not always, but often. If your existing switchboard has no spare circuit positions, an inadequate main switch rating, or does not provide RCD protection on all circuits, an upgrade is required before adding a new high-load circuit. Our assessment will identify exactly what work is needed and what it will cost, before any commitment is required from you.

Switchboards installed in Australia from the 1940s through the early 1980s frequently used asbestos-containing materials as a backing panel or arc-suppression component. If your switchboard was installed before 1990 and has not been replaced, there is a meaningful probability that asbestos is present. Starwatt can arrange a clearance inspection prior to any work, and we coordinate licensed asbestos removal where required before proceeding with the electrical upgrade.
