Every outdoor lighting installation we undertake is engineered for the environment it will operate in. We do not retrofit indoor fittings into garden applications.
Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting Systems
The majority of landscape path, feature, and garden lighting is most effectively delivered through a 12V low-voltage system. Low-voltage systems are inherently safer than mains-voltage installations in wet and garden environments, allow fittings to be repositioned as the garden evolves, and are supplied by an electronic transformer with built-in overload and short-circuit protection. Starwatt designs low-voltage systems with correctly calculated cable runs — accounting for voltage drop across the full length of each cable run — to ensure consistent brightness across every fitting regardless of its distance from the transformer.

Security and Motion-Activated Lighting
Security lighting is most effective when it is integrated into the landscape scheme rather than bolted on as an afterthought. A floodlight mounted at fascia level that activates unexpectedly is both visually jarring and prone to nuisance triggering from animals and passing traffic. Starwatt designs security zones into the landscape lighting layout — positioning dual-technology PIR and microwave sensors to cover key approach paths and entry points, and setting sensitivity and lux-level thresholds that distinguish pedestrian activity from wind-blown foliage. IP65 is the minimum for any fitting exposed to direct rainfall or garden irrigation. In-ground fittings buried in lawn or garden beds require IP67 minimum — rated for temporary submersion — because sprinkler overspray and pooling water are inevitable. Submersible pool and fountain fittings require IP68. In coastal locations with salt-laden air, IP rating alone is insufficient; the fitting housing must also be specified in marine-grade stainless steel or UV-stable polymer to prevent corrosion.
Yes, provided the transformer has sufficient spare capacity. Each LED fitting draws a small wattage — typically 2–6 watts — so a 150-watt transformer running 15 fittings at 3 watts each has capacity for additional fittings. However, cable run length also affects how many fittings can be added to any given cable without exceeding the permissible voltage drop. We assess available capacity and run length headroom before adding to any existing system.
The primary risks are line trimmer damage to low-mounted fittings and lawn mower contact with ground-spike fittings in lawn areas. Starwatt uses protective conduit sleeves on cable runs through lawn areas and specifies recessed or flush-mounted in-ground fittings in any surface that will be maintained with power equipment. We also provide as-built cable route drawings so landscape contractors can avoid cable runs when edging or aerating.
