Solar and Battery Systems Performing at Their Peak

A solar and battery system is a long-term infrastructure investment that degrades incrementally — and silently — when not maintained. Starwatt Systems provides scheduled maintenance, performance monitoring, inverter servicing, and battery health assessments to ensure your system delivers its projected yield every year of its rated service life.

Solar & Battery Maintenance

Solar panels have no moving parts and inverters are solid-state devices — the maintenance requirement is real, but it is not demanding. The problem is that degradation is gradual enough to escape notice. A system producing 10% below its optimal output costs the owner money every day, but the reduction is rarely dramatic enough to trigger concern without reference to baseline performance data. Starwatt Systems establishes that baseline, tracks performance against it, and intervenes when the data indicates a problem — before that problem compounds.

Our solar and battery maintenance service is structured for residential and small commercial systems. We work across all major inverter brands including SMA, Fronius, SolarEdge, Enphase, Sungrow, and Goodwe, and we are accredited to work on the principal battery storage systems deployed in Australia including the Tesla Powerwall, BYD Battery-Box, Sungrow SBR, and Alpha-ESS range.

Solar Panel Inspection and Cleaning

A layer of dust, bird droppings, pollen, and atmospheric particulates that appears visually minor can reduce panel output by 10–20% depending on soiling concentration and panel orientation. Panels installed in horizontal or near-horizontal configurations in areas with infrequent rainfall accumulate soiling fastest. Starwatt conducts a full visual inspection of every panel during each maintenance visit, assessing for micro-cracks, delamination, hot-spots caused by cell damage or shading, and soiling patterns that suggest a bird or pest issue. Panels are cleaned using deionised water and soft brushes to remove soiling without scratching the anti-reflective coating.

  • Deionised water panel wash with soft-brush agitation — no harsh chemicals or high-pressure equipment
  • Visual inspection for micro-cracks, cell discolouration, delamination, and frame corrosion
  • Thermal imaging of panel array to identify hot-spot cells caused by damage or shading
  • Inspection of racking fixings, flashing, and penetration seals for roof integrity
  • Bird mesh and pest exclusion assessment and installation where nesting is present

Inverter Servicing and Diagnostics

The inverter is the most electrically active component in a solar system and the most likely to require attention over the system's life. Inverter servicing includes inspection of cooling fan operation, cleaning of air filter and heatsink fins, checking DC and AC terminal torque, and reviewing the inverter's internal fault log for intermittent errors that do not generate a visible alarm. String inverters accumulate error codes from voltage fluctuations, grid events, and communication dropouts that an owner monitoring only the daily yield figure will never see. These codes frequently foreshadow component failure, and early intervention is far less expensive than an emergency replacement.

  • Internal fault log retrieval and analysis across full operational history
  • Cooling fan inspection, cleaning, and replacement where degraded
  • DC isolator and AC connection torque verification to AS/NZS 5033
  • Inverter firmware update to current manufacturer release — critical for both performance and cybersecurity
  • Grid connection parameter verification against current DNSP connection requirements

Battery Health Assessment

Battery storage systems degrade through charge-discharge cycling, thermal stress, and cell imbalance — all measurable, all manageable with the right monitoring data. Starwatt performs battery health assessments using manufacturer diagnostic tools and, where available, third-party battery management system (BMS) monitoring platforms. The assessment captures state of health (SoH) as a percentage of original capacity, cycle count relative to warranty cycle life, cell voltage balance across the battery module stack, and operating temperature history. A battery at 80% SoH is performing within warranty parameters; a battery at 65% SoH is approaching the point where it should be evaluated for replacement against the projected solar financial model.

Performance Monitoring and Yield Verification

Performance monitoring is the foundation on which all other maintenance decisions rest. Without a baseline and ongoing data, every maintenance visit is a reactive exercise. Starwatt configures and validates monitoring platforms — including the inverter manufacturer's own cloud portal, SolarEdge Monitoring, Enphase Enlighten, and Fronius Solar.web — to ensure logging intervals are correctly set, data is being transmitted without gaps, and yield is being compared against a weather-adjusted performance model, not just a fixed daily target. For systems without cloud monitoring, we install compatible data loggers with local and remote access as part of the maintenance scope.

  • Monitoring platform configuration and validation — correct inverter registration, logging interval, and alert settings
  • Yield comparison against weather-normalised performance ratio (PR) benchmark
  • String-level performance analysis on SolarEdge and Enphase microinverter systems to identify underperforming modules
  • Monthly automated performance reports configured and delivered to client email
  • Annual performance review with written summary of year-on-year generation trend and maintenance recommendations

Firmware Updates and Cybersecurity

Grid-connected solar inverters are network-connected devices. Inverter manufacturers release firmware updates that address grid compliance requirements issued by network distributors, correct software bugs that cause nuisance disconnections, improve MPPT efficiency, and — increasingly — patch cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the inverter's web interface and cloud communication stack. An inverter running firmware that is several versions behind the current release may be non-compliant with current DNSP connection requirements and may expose the home network to known vulnerabilities. Starwatt checks and applies all available firmware updates during each maintenance visit, using manufacturer-approved update procedures to prevent corruption during the update process.

FAQ

Solar & Battery Maintenance questions

For residential systems, an annual maintenance visit covering panel cleaning, inverter servicing, and battery assessment is the minimum recommended schedule. Systems in dusty environments, near agricultural activity, or subject to regular bird activity benefit from a six-monthly cleaning cycle. Commercial systems with larger arrays and greater financial exposure to underperformance are typically maintained on a quarterly schedule with continuous remote monitoring.

Yes. The displayed daily yield only tells you what the system produced today; it does not tell you whether the inverter's internal fault log contains intermittent error codes, whether the cooling fans are degraded, whether DC connection torques have loosened through thermal cycling, or whether the firmware is current. Many inverter failures are preceded by weeks of intermittent faults that appear in the error log before they produce a visible display alarm or yield reduction.

State of health (SoH) is a percentage that compares the battery's current usable capacity to its original rated capacity. A 10 kWh battery at 85% SoH holds approximately 8.5 kWh of usable energy. Most battery warranties define end-of-warranty capacity at 70–80% SoH after a specified number of cycles or years. When SoH drops below that threshold, the battery may qualify for a warranty claim or replacement at a prorated cost depending on the manufacturer's terms.
