Generator Installation

Standby and prime power generation is one of the most consequential electrical installations a facility will ever commission. When the grid fails, a generator set and its automatic transfer switching system must perform with absolute reliability in the seconds that matter. Lumen & Wire designs, installs, and commissions diesel and gas generator installations for mission-critical facilities, data centres, hospitals, aged-care providers, commercial towers, and industrial plant across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. We approach every generator project as a resilience engineering problem, not simply a cabling exercise.

Load studies are the foundation of every generator specification we produce. An undersized generator that collapses under motor starting inrush or harmonic loading is not a standby power system; it is a liability. We analyse the full load profile of the facility, account for non-linear loads, assess motor starting kVA demand, and apply appropriate derating factors for altitude and ambient temperature before specifying generator kVA rating and generator set configuration. Where parallel operation or N+1 redundancy is required, we design the switchgear and protection coordination accordingly.

Automatic Transfer Switching and Protection Coordination

The automatic transfer switch is the operational heart of any standby generation system. Lumen & Wire specifies and installs open-transition, closed-transition, and bypass-isolation ATS panels from leading switchgear manufacturers, configured to the transfer time, load-shedding sequence, and retransfer logic that each facility requires. We coordinate with network distributors for embedded generation protection settings and ensure that islanding protection, reverse power relays, and generator protection relay packages comply with the distributor's connection standards and with AS 4777 where applicable.

  • Load studies and generator sizing reports with motor starting analysis and harmonic derating
  • Open-transition and closed-transition ATS panels with programmable transfer delay and retransfer logic
  • Generator room and enclosure electrical fit-out including battery chargers, remote annunciators, and fuel level monitoring
  • Fuel system wiring for day tanks, bulk storage, fuel transfer pumps, and leak detection
  • Essential services distribution boards and wiring for life-safety circuits under the National Construction Code
  • Witness-tested load-bank commissioning with a formal test report and handover documentation package

Commissioning, Load-Bank Testing, and Ongoing Support

A generator that has not been load-bank tested is a generator that has not been commissioned. Wet-stacking, unloaded running hours, and inadequate servicing of standby plant are among the most common causes of generator failure under load. Lumen & Wire arranges and witnesses resistive and reactive load-bank testing to the percentage of nameplate rating required by AS/NZS 3010 and the client's specification, producing a test report that documents voltage regulation, frequency stability, transfer time, and fuel consumption at each load step.

Beyond commissioning, we offer annual load-bank testing programs and routine generator electrical maintenance that covers battery systems, automatic voltage regulators, control panel wiring, and ATS exerciser function. For facilities operating under healthcare accreditation, data centre tier certification, or essential services maintenance plans, we provide the documented evidence trail that compliance audits require.

Frequently Asked

Generator Installation — your questions answered

A standby-rated generator is designed for infrequent operation during grid outages, typically limited to 200 hours per year at full load with no sustained overload capability. A prime-rated generator is designed for continuous or frequent operation as a primary power source. The appropriate rating depends on your expected run hours, load profile, and the consequences of an overload condition during extended outages.

A straightforward standby installation for a commercial building can be completed in four to eight weeks from design sign-off, including switchboard modifications, cabling, and load-bank commissioning. Larger or more complex projects involving parallel generation, essential services reticulation, or building works for generator rooms will have longer programmes. We provide a detailed project programme at the design stage so that you can plan your operational requirements accordingly.

Yes. We prepare and submit the embedded generation connection application, liaise with the distributor's protection and metering teams, and implement any specific protection relay settings required as a condition of connection. This process is often underestimated by facilities teams and is a common source of commissioning delays when not managed early.

In most cases, yes. We assess the existing generator control panel, switchboard arrangement, and load profile, then design an ATS retrofit that delivers automatic transfer without requiring replacement of the generator set itself. This is a cost-effective upgrade for facilities that have outgrown a manually-operated standby system.
