Ceramic fuses don't provide earth leakage protection, and the fuse wire can be — and often is — replaced with wire of the wrong rating by well-meaning homeowners, removing the only overcurrent protection the circuit has. An RCD (residual current device) detects earth leakage — a potentially lethal current path through a person — and disconnects the circuit quickly. An RCBO combines that protection with a miniature circuit breaker, so it also protects against overloads and short circuits. The key practical advantage of RCBOs is that one per circuit means a trip on one circuit doesn't affect any others. Modern wiring rules now mandate this level of protection on most circuits in new and upgraded installations.
Three-phase supply can dramatically increase the capacity available to your home — most EV chargers operating on three-phase can deliver 22 kW versus 7 kW on single phase, and large workshop machinery and air conditioning equipment often operates more efficiently on three-phase power. Whether it's available at your property depends on what the distributor has in the street.
