ELV and Mains Systems — Knowing Which to Use

Twelve-volt extra-low-voltage lighting systems offer genuine advantages in garden applications: they are inherently safer around water, easier to adjust as plantings mature, and compatible with a wide range of architectural-grade LED fixtures that simply are not available in mains voltage formats. Our licensed electricians design ELV systems with correctly rated transformers, appropriately sized cable runs, and voltage-drop calculations that ensure fittings at the end of a long garden circuit perform identically to those at the source — a detail overlooked by many installers that results in the uneven colour temperatures and dim endpoints that frustrate homeowners years after installation.

Mains-voltage systems are the right choice for high-output façade wash luminaires, pole-mounted driveway lighting, and anywhere structural permanence is required. We carry out all trenching, conduit installation, and connection work to AS/NZS 3000:2018 (Wiring Rules), with weatherproof junction boxes, correctly rated outdoor GPOs, and RCD protection on every outdoor circuit as required by the National Construction Code.

Automation, Control, and Long-Term Performance

A landscape lighting system that requires manual switching is a system that rarely gets used. Every Lumen & Wire outdoor installation includes a programmed control layer — at minimum, astronomical timers that self-adjust through the year so lights activate precisely at civil dusk and extinguish at a chosen time, eliminating the need for seasonal reprogramming. Passive infrared sensors, driveway beam detectors, and LDR daylight sensors are integrated where motion-responsive or security-focused operation is required.

For clients integrating outdoor lighting with broader smart-home platforms, we commission Casambi Bluetooth mesh networks, DALI-2 dimming buses, or Clipsal C-Bus extensions that bring the garden into the same control environment as interior spaces. We document all installed zones, transformer schedules, and control logic so that future landscape changes — additional plantings, pool additions, pergola extensions — can be incorporated cleanly rather than grafted on as afterthoughts.
