A dedicated home cinema or distributed audio-visual system is one of the most technically demanding residential installations an electrical contractor undertakes — and one of the most unforgiving if the underlying infrastructure is treated as an afterthought. At Lumen & Wire, we approach AV electrical work with the same structured methodology we apply to a commercial switchroom: detailed design first, quality products throughout, and a commissioning process that does not end until every source, every zone, and every control surface performs exactly as it should.

Our home theatre and AV services span the full scope of electrical and low-voltage infrastructure: from the dedicated power circuits and surge suppression that protect sensitive electronics, through to the concealed HDMI 2.1 and active optical fibre cable runs that carry 8K HDR signals without signal degradation, to the in-wall and in-ceiling speaker wiring that determines whether a Dolby Atmos mix sounds spatially accurate or merely loud. We work in close partnership with your AV integrator, interior designer, and builder, fitting around their programmes and documenting every run so that the system can be expanded, serviced, or handed over to a new owner without mystery.

Infrastructure That Supports the Technology

The single most common cause of home theatre performance problems is inadequate power infrastructure. Sensitive AV processors, power amplifiers, and display calibration equipment are intolerant of the voltage fluctuations, high-frequency noise, and shared neutral issues that commonly affect domestic power circuits. Lumen & Wire installs dedicated sub-circuits from the main switchboard for AV equipment loads, fitted with appropriately rated GPOs on their own RCD-protected breakers. Where the equipment list includes high-current power amplifiers, we calculate load requirements per rack and size conductors accordingly rather than defaulting to standard domestic cable sizes.

For screening rooms with structural considerations — stepped floors, acoustic wall treatments, raked seating — we coordinate with the builder during framing to route all conduit and cable pathways before linings go on. Acoustic in-wall conduit, correctly sized pull-through tubes for future HDMI or fibre upgrades, and structured rack spaces with adequate ventilation clearance are far easier to provide before plasterboard than after. This discipline at the infrastructure stage is what separates a cinema room that functions beautifully from one that requires invasive remediation within two years.

Multi-Room Audio and Distributed Video

Not every AV project is a single-room cinema. Many of our residential clients want music and video accessible throughout the house — on the deck, in the kitchen, beside the pool, in the master bedroom — from a single, coherent control point. We design and install the structured cabling backbone that makes this possible: dedicated speaker home-runs to each zone, HDMI or HDBaseT distribution cabling between equipment head-end and room displays, and control bus wiring to keypads and touch panels positioned for comfortable use.

The quality of the cable infrastructure determines the quality ceiling of the entire system. We specify oxygen-free copper speaker cable in appropriate gauges for run lengths, shielded twisted-pair for control bus applications, and plenum-rated cable where it passes through concealed ceiling voids. Every termination is made to a consistent standard, labelled in the rack, and verified against a documented schedule before the integrator arrives to load their programming. Our job is to hand over infrastructure that performs, so your integrator's time is spent on the creative commissioning work rather than tracing unlabelled cable faults.

Home Theatre & AV — your questions answered

Domestic power circuits typically serve multiple outlets on a shared conductor, which means voltage fluctuations from other loads — refrigerators cycling, dishwashers starting, air conditioning compressors engaging — are present at the equipment feed. High-end amplifiers, DACs, and projectors are sensitive to this noise, and it manifests as audible hum, display calibration drift, or premature component failure. Dedicated circuits also allow correctly sized cable runs that maintain voltage stability under the sustained loads that power amplifiers draw.

Standard passive HDMI 2.1 cable is reliable to approximately five metres for 48Gbps (8K/60Hz) signals. For longer in-wall runs, we use active optical fibre HDMI cables, which carry full 48Gbps bandwidth over distances of 10 to 50 metres with no signal degradation. These are more expensive than passive copper but are the only reliable solution for routing between equipment racks and wall-mounted displays in large rooms or multi-storey homes. All runs are tested before walls are closed.

It depends on ceiling construction and access. In homes with accessible ceiling cavities — a common feature in Melbourne's period and post-war housing stock — we can frequently route in-ceiling speaker cables with minimal disruption using fishing techniques and localised access points. In concrete slab construction, surface conduit finished in Barton or integrated into bulkhead framing is typically the most practical approach. We assess access conditions during a pre-installation site visit and provide an honest recommendation before any commitments are made.

We specialise in the electrical and low-voltage cabling infrastructure side of AV installations and work comfortably as a subcontractor alongside AV integrators, interior designers, and builders. We attend site meetings, review integrator cable schedules, and coordinate our work programme with surrounding trades. The division of scope between our work and the integrator's is documented clearly in advance to avoid gaps or doubling up.
