Test and tag is not an administrative box-tick — it is the primary mechanism by which electrical equipment faults are detected before they cause electric shock injuries or fires. Under AS/NZS 3760:2022 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment, every item of in-service electrical equipment connected via a plug must be visually inspected and electrically tested at intervals appropriate to its environment and use classification. For construction sites and manufacturing environments the required intervals are significantly shorter than for office environments, and the consequences of non-compliance extend from WorkCover prosecution to voided insurance.

What AS/NZS 3760 Requires

AS/NZS 3760 prescribes both the visual inspection criteria and the electrical test parameters for each class of equipment. Visual inspection checks for damaged plugs, cut or abraded cable insulation, evidence of overheating, incorrect plug or socket configurations and missing strain relief. Electrical testing requires an earth continuity test at 10 A to verify that the protective earth conductor resistance is within the class limits defined in the standard, and an insulation resistance test at 500 V DC with a minimum acceptance threshold of 1 MOhm for Class I equipment. Equipment used in hostile environments — construction sites, workshops, outdoor, wet areas — requires more frequent inspection and testing intervals. Records, Registers and Compliance Evidence

Same-day digital delivery of test records is standard on every Ironclad test and tag engagement. You receive a complete equipment register in both Excel and PDF format listing every item tested, its asset number or description, the test results, the PASS/FAIL outcome, the test date and the next due date. Failed items are flagged separately with a recommendation for repair or disposal. Where items are repaired on the spot by our technicians — a plug replacement, a cord repair — the repair is logged against the asset record with the post-repair test result. How often does equipment need to be tested under AS/NZS 3760?
Testing frequency under AS/NZS 3760 depends on the environment in which the equipment is used. Construction site equipment requires testing every 3 months. Equipment used in manufacturing, workshops and industrial environments requires testing every 6 months. Equipment used in offices and commercial environments is typically tested every 12 months, with the exception of items identified as used in hostile conditions. Ironclad technicians classify each item at the time of testing and assign the appropriate retest interval to your asset register so your schedule is always current.
Can we use our own maintenance staff to do test and tag?
Under AS/NZS 3760 testing must be carried out by a competent person defined as someone with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to perform the inspection and testing correctly. The standard does not require testing to be done by a licensed electrician — a trained and assessed person can perform basic test and tag. However, for industrial sites with complex equipment types, high-voltage portable tools or Class III SELV equipment, and where detailed test records are required for insurance or WHS audit purposes, using a licensed electrical contractor provides a higher standard of accountability and documentation than an in-house program.
What happens to equipment that fails the test?
Failed equipment is immediately tagged OUT OF SERVICE with a red FAIL tag that clearly states the item must not be used. A failed item is quarantined from service until it is either repaired and retested or disposed of. Where the fault is a simple plug replacement or cord repair that our technicians can rectify on site, we do so immediately with the client's approval, retest the item and issue a PASS tag. Items with more complex faults — damaged tool bodies, motor winding failures, cord set damage near the appliance entry point — are logged as condemned and the client is advised to dispose of them. We never clear a failed item under pressure.
